Racing
Jonny and Annabel getting it together
Overview
We are a diverse group with mixed abilities and ages from 8 to 80. We meet every Saturday at Riverside Wimborne. Here we paddle on the river Stour in light weight racing kayaks and canoes. We paddle racing boats for different reasons; recreation, fitness and racing.
Marathon
This is racing in groups of similar abilities over distances ranging from a few miles to the 125 miles of the Devizes to Westminster. The races are usually run in the sheltered water of canals, rivers and estuaries. These races generally involve a mass start and paddling in packs, riding the wash of the paddlers around them. Where obstacles are encountered like locks on a canal you jump out your boat and portage it round.
Sprint
This is race over distances from 200 - 1000m as fast as you possibly can.
SurfSki
These are kayaks designed to ride the ocean swell.
Wild Water Racing
These are kayaks and canoes race down rivers as fast as they can avoiding the hard lumps (rocks).
How To get started
We run taster sessions so you can try out these boats. We have a number of club boats that can be hired.
We run training courses to improve your technique and confidence in this craft.
Club Activities
We meet every Saturday morning at Riverside Wimborne from 0900 - 1130.
During the summer months we have evening paddles on Tuesday and Thursday from 1900 - 2023.
As a club we travel to participate in the Haslar races, Marathon Nationals, National Sprints and other events. These are very sociable events and good fun. They cater for all abilities; it is all about giving it a go.
